The short version
Movu is a social movie-logging and recommendation app. We collect the account, profile, movie activity, social activity, preferences, and technical information needed to operate and improve the app. If you join the launch waitlist, we also collect the name and email address you provide. We do not currently use your activity for personalized advertising and we do not sell personal information.
Some information is shared with other Movu users when you use social features. Selected information is also processed by service providers that support cloud infrastructure, movie data, automated moderation, AI-generated features, product analytics, reliability, feedback, and push notifications.
Data we collect
Website waitlist
If you join the Movu waitlist, we collect the name and email address you submit. Website and infrastructure providers may also receive standard technical information such as IP address, browser type, timestamps, and request details needed to deliver, secure, and troubleshoot the site.
Account and profile information
We collect your email address, a unique account identifier, display name, and—if you add one—profile photo. During sign-up, your date of birth is used once to confirm that you are at least 13; the current app does not store the date of birth in your Movu profile.
Movie activity and content
We collect films you log or save, ratings, dates watched, rewatches, watch context (such as home, theater, streaming, or other), watchlist entries, reviews, spoiler settings, review likes and replies, badges, challenge progress, and data derived from that activity, including statistics, predictions, Viewer Personality, Crew Personality, and Rewind summaries.
Social activity
We collect friendships, follows, friend requests, Movie Crew membership and invitations, Crew activity, and “watched together” connections.
Preferences
We collect genre preferences, favorite movie, streaming-service selections, notification preferences, and a country or region used to show relevant availability and theatrical releases.
Location
If you use a location-based feature and grant permission, Movu requests low-accuracy foreground location and converts it to a country code. The current app does not intentionally store precise latitude or longitude in Movu’s database. If you deny permission, the feature falls back to a default region.
Photos, camera, and files
With permission, Movu can access a photo you select or a new camera photo for your profile image. If you attach a screenshot to feedback, that image and your written feedback are sent to our diagnostics and feedback provider. If you import a supported movie-service export, Movu temporarily uploads the selected CSV files, processes their movie titles, ratings, dates, and source links, and removes the uploaded source files after processing; staging and batch records may remain for import review and operational history.
Device, analytics, and diagnostics
We collect product events such as screens viewed, searches performed (including query length rather than the search text in the reviewed event), movies logged, reviews submitted, trailers played, and links selected. Our providers may also process device type, operating system, app version, network information, IP address, timestamps, crash details, performance traces, and similar diagnostics. Movu associates a pseudonymous user identifier with analytics and error reports where configured.
Notifications
If you enable push notifications, we store a push-notification token, device platform, preference settings, and update time linked to your account.
How we use information
- Manage the Movu waitlist and send beta invitations and occasional launch updates that you requested.
- Provide authentication, profiles, movie logging, ratings, reviews, watchlists, imports, exports, and social features.
- Calculate taste matches, recommendations, predicted ratings, Crew insights, statistics, badges, and Rewind summaries.
- Show region-appropriate theater releases and streaming availability.
- Moderate reviews, investigate reports, maintain community safety, and handle appeals.
- Send notifications you enable, including import-completion notices.
- Measure product use, diagnose failures, improve performance, prevent abuse, and protect the service.
- Comply with law, enforce our terms, and establish or defend legal claims.
AI and automated processing
Review moderation
Before a review is saved, its text is sent to a third-party automated moderation service. Movu stores the review text, movie identifier, moderation result, category signals, and your account identifier in moderation logs. A flagged review may be blocked. Service failures may be logged with account and movie identifiers.
Predictions and Viewer Personality
Movu uses deterministic calculations and a third-party generative AI service to explain predicted ratings and create Viewer Personality text. The prompt can include selected movie titles, genres, directors, release details, your ratings, dates, and comparisons with public movie averages. The reviewed prompts do not include your display name, email address, or raw Movu user identifier.
Crew Personality
For eligible Crews, the generative AI provider receives aggregate Crew information such as member count, shared movie titles, average ratings, disagreement measures, and common genres. The reviewed prompt deliberately avoids member names and identifies people only in aggregate.
Movu does not currently offer a global switch that disables every AI-generated prediction or personality feature. You can choose not to request those features, but some prediction surfaces may still appear based on your activity.
Retention and account deletion
We keep information while your account is active and as reasonably needed to provide the service, maintain security and records, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations. Different records may have different retention periods. The current product does not yet define a fixed deletion schedule for every analytics, moderation, import-staging, or diagnostic record.
We keep waitlist contact information until the beta and launch communications are complete, until you opt out, or until you ask us to delete it, whichever comes first.
You can request account deletion inside Movu. Deletion begins with a 30-day recovery window. During that period your display name and profile photo are hidden, your account is removed from friend and Crew rosters, and the original profile values and avatar file are retained only so you can reactivate.
After 30 days, the authentication account is soft-deleted, the saved original profile values are cleared, and the retained avatar is scheduled for removal. Reviews and watch history are intentionally retained in anonymized form and shown as belonging to “Deleted User.” Some Crew ownership may transfer to another member. If no eligible owner remains, the Crew may be removed.
Data-export links expire after 10 minutes. Third-party import source files are removed after processing, although the imported records, review staging, and batch status can remain as part of your account history.
Your choices and controls
- Waitlist: You can withdraw your consent, leave the waitlist, or request deletion of your waitlist information by emailing [email protected].
- Profile: Update your display name, favorite movie, preferences, and photo in the app.
- Permissions: Control location, camera, photo-library, and notification access in your device settings.
- Notifications: Manage supported notification categories in Movu’s settings and all push access in device settings.
- Export: Request a private ZIP archive from Settings → Data Import & Export. The current export includes profile, logged movies, rewatch history, watchlist, reviews, replies, likes, friendships, follows, Crew memberships, and badges. Derived predictions and AI-usage records are excluded because they may indirectly reflect another user’s ratings.
- Delete: Request deletion from Settings → Profile Settings → Delete Account. Re-entering your password is required.
- Social content: Delete or edit supported content in the app before deleting your account if you do not want that content retained in anonymized form.
To ask a privacy question or exercise a right available in your jurisdiction, email [email protected]. You may also use Settings → Send Feedback and label the message “Privacy Request.” We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.
Security
Movu uses managed authentication, row-level access controls, authenticated storage rules, limited signed download links, password re-entry for account deletion, and transport encryption provided by our platforms. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children
Movu is not intended for children under 13. The sign-up flow asks for date of birth to confirm age eligibility but does not retain it in the current profile schema. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information, contact us through the in-app feedback route so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
International processing
Movu and its service providers may process information in the United States and other countries whose laws may differ from those where you live. Where required, we will use appropriate safeguards for international transfers.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Movu changes. We will revise the effective date and provide additional notice when a change is material. Your continued use after an update is subject to the updated policy to the extent permitted by law.
Contact
For privacy questions or requests, email [email protected]. You can also open Movu and go to Settings → Send Feedback; include “Privacy Request” in the first line so it can be routed correctly.
